Janoshik Testing Explained: How Verification Works

Spend an hour in any research compound forum and one lab name comes up more than every other name combined. Buyers post reports from it, vendors advertise that they use it, and arguments about whether a product is what it claims to be usually end with somebody saying “post the Janoshik.”

That reputation is worth understanding on its own terms, because most of what gets said about Janoshik Analytical is secondhand. This post covers who they are, what they actually test, what a report contains, and the specific mechanism that makes their reports harder to fake than a PDF hosted on a vendor’s own website.

Who Janoshik Analytical is

Janoshik Analytical is an independent analytical laboratory operating out of the Czech Republic. Independent, in this context, means the lab does not sell the material it tests. It runs analysis as a service, for whoever pays for it, and it has no stake in whether a given sample passes or fails.

That structural detachment is the entire reason the lab matters. A vendor testing its own product has an obvious incentive problem. A lab that tests thousands of samples a year for buyers, vendors, and competitors of both has an incentive to produce results that hold up, because its business is the credibility of its reports.

Janoshik became the default reference in this category for a few practical reasons:

None of that makes them the only competent lab, and it should not be read as a claim that other labs are worse. It explains why this one specific lab name shows up so often.

What Janoshik actually tests

There are three distinct questions an analytical lab can answer about a research compound, and they are routinely confused with each other. Janoshik offers tests aimed at all three.

HPLC purity is the test most people mean when they say “a Janoshik test.” High performance liquid chromatography separates the components of a sample as they pass through a column, and a detector records what comes out and when. The reported purity is an area percentage: the area under the main peak divided by the total area of all peaks the detector registered. A clean result means a clean chromatographic profile. It does not mean the vial is 99% peptide by weight, which is a different measurement entirely and one we cover in peptide purity explained.

Mass spectrometry answers identity. It measures molecular weight and compares it to the expected weight for the molecule on the label. This is the test that catches substitution. If a vial labeled one compound contains a cheaper, structurally different compound, an HPLC purity run can look perfectly clean because the substitute is itself pure. Only MS flags the mismatch.

Quantification measures how much of the target compound is actually present per vial. Janoshik includes an amount figure in its standard analysis, so most of its reports carry one. Strict gravimetric net peptide content by elemental analysis is a separate paid add-on, and arguably the most informative number about what a buyer paid for, because lyophilized material also contains water and salt that no UV detector sees.

HPLC alone is a partial picture. The standard analysis at the major labs now bundles identity, purity, and amount in one report - the meaningful upgrades beyond that are the elemental-analysis and contaminant add-ons.

What a Janoshik report contains

A report is a short PDF, and every field on it is doing work.

If a vendor sends you a cropped screenshot of the purity line rather than the full document, ask for the full document. There is no good reason to withhold it.

The verification system

This is the section that matters, and it is the reason Janoshik reports occupy a different tier from most COAs in circulation.

Every Janoshik report carries a task number and a unique key. The lab hosts a public verification page where anyone can enter those two values and see the record as the lab issued it. You do not need an account. You do not need permission from the vendor who gave you the document. You are querying the lab’s own system directly.

The consequence is straightforward. If somebody edits the PDF, the lab-side record does not change with it. A purity number bumped from 91% to 99% in a graphics editor will still read 91% when you look up the task number. A report copied from a different product will show a different sample name. A fabricated report will have a task number that returns nothing at all.

That is a structural difference, not a matter of degree. A vendor-hosted PDF with no lookup mechanism asks you to trust the vendor. A report with a working verification key asks you to trust a lab you contacted yourself, on a page the vendor does not control.

In the COA verification hierarchy we use across all of our writing, this is Tier 1, and it is the only tier where the vendor is removed from the chain entirely.

Three practical notes on using it:

  1. Check both values, and read the sample name. A key that resolves confirms the report is genuine. It does not confirm the report describes the product in your hand. Match the compound name, the date, and the batch reference against what you were sold.
  2. A missing key is an answer. If a vendor publishes a Janoshik report with the task number or key cropped, blurred, or removed, they have removed the only feature that made the document worth more than a screenshot. Ask for it. What happens next is informative.
  3. Confirm the current process on the lab’s own site. Verification mechanics, page addresses, and report formats change. Go to the lab directly rather than following a link a vendor gave you, for the same reason you would not verify a bank notice by calling the number printed on it.

How an individual commissions a test

Anyone can send a sample. The process does not require an institution behind you.

  1. Submit a request through the lab’s site. You specify the compound, the tests you want, and the number of samples.
  2. Ship the sample. Usually one vial, packaged per the lab’s current instructions. International shipping from the US is normal for this lab and is generally the slowest part of the timeline.
  3. Pay for the analysis. Expect roughly $215 to $450 for a standard single-peptide analysis, which bundles identity, amount, and purity in one base price. The paid add-ons are extras like TFA content, net peptide content by elemental analysis, endotoxin, and sterility testing. Treat those figures as a rough current range rather than a quote. Pricing changes, and the lab’s own site is the only authority on what a test costs today.
  4. Receive the report. The lab states an average turnaround of about 7 business days once the sample arrives, with a rush option; it varies with queue depth and the tests requested.

The reason to do this yourself rather than rely on a vendor’s document is chain of custody. When the sample travels from your hands to the lab’s hands, there is no point in the process where anyone could have substituted material or edited a number. It is the only evidence about a supplier that does not originate with the supplier.

For anyone buying at wholesale volumes, the arithmetic is not close. One test against a five-figure inventory order is a rounding error, and it is the difference between believing a supplier and knowing something about them.

What the results can and cannot tell you

An analytical report is a chemistry document. It describes composition. It is silent on everything else.

That is the defensible version of the claim. It does not mean every PDF with the Janoshik letterhead on it is genuine, because those are trivially editable. It means every genuine report has a task number and unique key that resolve on the lab’s own verification page, and any report that does not resolve should be treated as unverified.

What is the difference between HPLC and mass spectrometry on a Janoshik report?

HPLC purity tells you how clean the sample is relative to the other things the detector could see. Mass spectrometry tells you whether the molecular weight matches the molecule on the label. Clean and correct are separate questions. A substituted compound can produce an excellent purity result, because the substitute is pure, which is exactly why a purity-only report cannot confirm identity.

Does a good Janoshik result mean a product is safe?

No. A purity or identity report is a measurement of chemical composition and nothing else. It says nothing about biological effect, about contaminants outside the method’s detection range, about handling and storage after the test, or about suitability for any purpose. Everything in this category is sold for laboratory and research use only and is not for human consumption. Purity is a chemistry measurement, and equating it with safety is the most common error buyers make when reading these documents.

The bottom line

The reason Janoshik reports carry weight is not the lab’s reputation. It is the task number and the unique key, and the fact that anyone can use them to bypass the vendor entirely and ask the lab directly.
